Jacob "Jake" Jacobson died Aug. 8, 2020, in Anytown, CA, at age 84. A teacher to the end, he was known in his retirement home as "Professor Jake," never missing an opportunity to hold forth with lessons on world history and geography.
Along with his three beloved children, Jake leaves behind thousands of students that he taught at Anytown High School during his 40 years there. Many of his students came to visit him in recent years, and those who brought along his favorite apple dumplings from Anytown Diner were granted his version of a gold star, the Jacobson Seal of Approval, which is a stamp he had made with a barking seal on it.
The only thing that Jake loved more than teaching was puns, and he asked that anyone who plans to speak at his memorial service include a pun in their address.
Jake was born on June 14, 1936. He served in the U.S. Army, instilling in him a lifelong love of travel. He eventually visited every continent except for Antarctica. On the G.I. Bill, he was able to attend Anytown State University and secure his teaching credential. While Jake never married and had no children of his own, he liked to say that all of his students were, in a way, his children.
He is survived by his brother, Clint, and four nephews: Kinsey, Denton, Ryder, and Hunter. Jake lived frugally and left a sizable portion of his estate to the Anytown Drop-In Center for Homeless Youth. In lieu of flowers, mourners are asked to send any donations there as well.
