Rose Amira Sandesh of New York, NY, died peacefully in her home on August 31, 2019, at the age of 87.
Rose was born on February 1, 1932, to Som and Selena Patel in Chennai, India. She immigrated to the United States at the age of two when her family settled in Chappaqua, NY. She grew up the eldest of eight, and she credited her early life with instilling a love of caretaking in her. After graduating from NYU in 1952, she became a registered nurse specializing in hospice and palliative treatment. An RN for more than fifty years, she did not retire until 2010.
Rose met her first husband and close friend, Jacob Ramsay, in 1949 when they were classmates together at NYU. They married in 1950 and had three children: Annika, Sam, and A.J. After the two divorced in 1961, Rose met and married John Sandesh, with whom she would have two more children: Tanya and Deep.
As Rose's family grew, she spent time cultivating a garden that she tended with the help of her children and grandchildren, and each family member was permitted their own patch to grow what they liked. Rose referred to it as her "family quilt," and used her spare time to bond with her relatives as they tended their crops.
Rose is survived by her five children and their spouses; grandchildren Adrian, Soli, Ajay, Carrie, Raj, Lori and Riya; great-grandchildren Hazel and Thor; sisters Amanda and Tanya; and brothers Michael, Harrison, Forrest, and Matthew. She is predeceased by her beloved husband, John; her parents, Som and Selena; her brothers, Lars and Tristan; and her grandson, Rakesh.
The public is welcome to a celebration of life at ABC Funeral Home on September 5 at 2:00 PM. Flowers and condolences are welcome.
