   Obituary Body Donated

Ms. Bethany "Betty" Grant of Tucson, AZ—professor, scientist, researcher, and friend—died in her home on Thursday, January 22, 2015 after a short illness. She was 67 years old.

Betty was born on June 3, 1947, to Hank and Greta Grant in Tucson, AZ. From a young age, she was fascinated by the sciences, and found particular interest in chemistry. After receiving advanced placement at Tucson High School, she was accepted at University of Arizona, graduating with a degree in organic chemistry in 1969. She received her graduate degree in medicinal chemistry in 1975 from the same institute and was granted a position as a professor in the chemistry department among the University of Arizona faculty.

Betty taught undergraduate chemistry classes for 36 years and spent her spare time researching molecular function and structure in medicinal chemistry. She was valued as a professor who was a capable scientist and an engaging teacher, often tutoring students through the material on her own time. She rarely left the school she loved, and devoted herself to the research that she knew would help the world.

Betty is survived by her mother, Greta Grant of Tucson, AZ; her sister, Helen Lowell of Denver, CO; and her niece, Jill Lowell of Denver, CO. She is preceded in death by her father, Hank Grant of Tucson, AZ.

At Betty's request, her body will be donated to the University of Arizona for the advancement of science. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Tucson, AZ. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the University of Arizona College of Medicine.
