Dr. Amy Candleshoe died Nov. 18, 2022 in Anytown, Calif. She was 86.
One of Anytown’s most respected physicians, Dr. Candleshoe was responsible for bringing cutting-edge cardiothoracic surgery to Anytown Hospital. Well before robotic surgery was the norm, she was advocating for use of the newest and best tools and techniques. Serving patients was her top priority, in any situation. Her skill at surgery was matched only by her bedside manner. The number of lives she saved cannot be quantified, and yet Dr. Candleshoe was the humblest of doctors, always happy to mentor others and share credit for new discoveries.
Amy Candleshoe was born on April 2, 1936 in Lima, Ohio to Jan and Gerta Candleshoe. She came west to California to attend Stanford University for undergrad, and then U.C. Irvine for medical school. She graduated among the first class in 1962, at a time when female physicians were still a novelty.
Dr. Candleshoe worked in several hospitals, honing her surgical skills before being hired in 1986 to lead Anytown Hospital’s new cardio wing.
Dr. Candleshoe sat on several nonprofit boards in Anytown, including the Boys & Girls Club, Anytown Soup Kitchen and Anytown United for Peace and Justice. She also gave generously to various causes.
She is survived by her sister, Patricia Garvey, as well as three nephews (Joshua, Jeremy and Jacob) and 10 great-nieces and great-nephews.
The cardio wing at Anytown Hospital will be renamed in Dr. Candleshoe’s honor, with a ceremony to be held on Dec. 8 at 4 p.m.
No funeral services will be held, and donations may be directed to the Dr. Amy Candleshoe Memorial Fund.
