Charles Apodaca died June 1, 2023 at age 75 in Anytown, Calif.
His death is a great loss to the community of Anytown. For more than five decades, Apodaca was an asset to his community in many roles, from volunteer to public servant. His impact is truly immeasurable.
Apodaca was born Feb. 4, 1948 in Sacramento to Guillermo and Renee Apodaca. The family moved to Anytown in time for young Charlie to attend kindergarten, and he proceeded to graduate from Anytown High School and go on to get his degree in Public Administration.
After a stint in the U.S. Army that was cut short by injury, Apodaca took a job teaching Government classes at his former high school. Before long, he was tapped for a position in the City Planning Department. He rose through the ranks of Anytown government, and held roles as diverse as Airport Manager and, ultimately, City Manager.
But it was after his early retirement at age 62 that Apodaca tapped into his other passion: volunteer work. Apodaca served on too many boards of directors to list; he was especially proud of his time on the Anytown Arts Council, where he voted for the controversial “On Alert” sculpture that was installed at City Hall in 2017. He was also an active member of Sunrise Rotary as well as Toastmasters.
Apodaca is survived by his wife of 48 years, Ruby Apodaca, also a relentless community volunteer, and their three children Paul Apodaca, Eric Apodaca, and Sasha Apodaca Garcia, as well as five grandchildren: Carter, Hunter, Fisher, Astrid, and Aylet.
A memorial event will be held at City Plaza at 11am on July 4 after the Anytown Pancake Breakfast. The Community Band will play and light refreshments will be served.
