Letter of Recommendation

   Obituary Expressing Forgiveness

John Sylvester Maxwell died July 1, 2023 at age 85 in Anytown, Calif.

“Maxy,” as he was known, was born May 16, 1938 in Los Angeles, Calif., to Harvey and Lucille Maxwell. He relocated to Anytown in 1985 to further his career as a civil engineer. In Anytown, he and his wife, Betty Sue, raised two much-loved children: Cheryl and Christine.

As part of his final wishes, Maxy asked that his obituary express his deep regret for any wrongs he had done to others in his lifetime, especially during the years that he struggled most with alcoholism. He reached out personally to as many people as possible but was certain he forgot some. In turn, he hoped that others could forgive him his wrongs.

His headstone will bear his chosen quotation, author unconfirmed: “Forgiveness does not change the past, but it does enlarge the future.”

Maxwell was preceded in death by his wife and is survived by their children as well as a niece, Monique Faraday.

No services will be held. Donations can be made anonymously or in Maxy’s name to the nonprofit Desert Retreat and Rehab Center in Palm Springs.
